CONTRAST > CONFORMITY
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgement.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgement; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny…"
Matthew 5:21-48
In the time of Jesus, Jewish culture was heavily influenced by Roman occupation and the religious elite, particularly the scribes and Pharisees.
These lawyers were meticulous in their adherence to the Law and served as the community’s legal authorities, often seeing their interpretations as binding as the Torah itself. The Pharisees were known for their dedication to Jewish purity, avoiding contact with non-Jews and ensuring kosher practices, distinguishing themselves from the more politically accommodating Sadducees.
When Jesus emerged, his radical teachings, especially phrases like “you have heard it said, but I say to you,” directly challenged the established norms and authority of the Pharisees, inciting their rage and ultimately leading to Jesus’ crucifixion and the persecution of His followers. Jesus encouraged His followers that although living in accordance with His Counter Kingdom teachings could attract hostility and rejection, they would be blessed and rewarded in Heaven for their commitment. By changing the prevailing notions of how a person can know God, He invites us into a Kingdom whereby not even keeping the Law is enough to gain entrance. Instead of anxiety, it provides relief, allowing us to trust in His work instead of our own.
This is the Counter Kingdom.
"The Christian is called to think according to the totality of Christ. In every area of life, we are to give evidence in our lives, our actions, and our thinking that, as Christians, we live in a different world.” Francis Schaeffer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Help us to be aware of the cultural influences that can hinder our growth in Your Kingdom. May we be discerning and choose environments and relationships that align with Your principles. Grant us the courage to stand out from the crowd and live a life that reflects Your love and righteousness. May we be willing to challenge societal norms and speak Your truth, even when it’s difficult. Empower us to resist the temptation to conform to the world’s values. Help us to prioritize Your Kingdom and Your ways above all else.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
