IT ONLY TAKES A WILLING HEART: THE POWER OF MENTORSHIP
HAVE YOU EVER TRIED TO FIGURE OUT SOMETHING ALL ON YOUR OWN…
Like, something you’ve never done before and have no clue how to do?
Sure, you try to give it your best shot, but, well, let’s say…it probably doesn’t exactly go as planned.
Picture this: You try changing the oil in your car, because you heard that it is kind of important to do, from time to time. So, to the best of your knowledge, you give it your best shot... but you forget to do one tiny little thing: put the oil plug back in the oil pan. You drive off, and before you know it, there’s a long trail of new golden oil behind you, and your car stalls out and dies…Oops!
This is what life can feel like for many guys who grow up without strong role models. They try their best to figure things out on their own, but sometimes things don’t go right—and that can lead to some serious consequences.
Now, imagine growing up without a real example of how to do life—no role model, no dad to show you the ropes. It’d be tough, right? You’d feel lost, frustrated, and discouraged. Wouldn’t it have been amazing if someone was there to guide you through, give you a few pointers, and encourage you along the way?
Now picture a world where every young person had someone to walk with them, to guide them, teach them, and show them the way to a better future.
You can help make that world a reality. You can be a mentor to a fatherless youth in the foster system.
MENTORING ISN’T ANYTHING NEW. IT’S AN ANCIENT IDEA.
Think of Paul and Timothy from the Bible. Paul, a seasoned apostle, took Timothy under his wing, showing him the ropes of leadership, faith, and life. Through their relationship, Timothy grew into a strong leader, ready to take on challenges and inspire others. Paul summons up his mentoring relationship with Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:22 when he says, “What you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.”
That’s the power of mentorship—sharing wisdom, offering support, and helping someone unlock their full potential.
January is National Mentoring Month—a time to celebrate the power of mentoring and recognize how important it is. But here’s the thing:
RECOGNITION IS GREAT, BUT ACTION IS WHERE THE REAL CHANGE HAPPENS.
It takes men of action who are ready to invest time and energy of action into the next generation. It’s about offering hope, giving advice, and most importantly, being there for someone who needs it.
At Man Up, we’re all about discipleship, essentially just mentoring.
The cool part is, you don’t have to be a pro or have everything figured out to be a great mentor. You just need a heart to serve and a willingness to share what you’ve learned along the way.
Mentoring can be simple. It’s not about fancy speeches or teaching big life lessons. It’s about spending time with a young person—shooting some hoops, grabbing pizza, talking about life, and being there for them.
YOU’VE GOT WHAT IT TAKES TO DO THAT.
So, as we celebrate National Mentoring Month, let’s turn recognition into action.

At Man Up, our coaching program helps young men in the foster care system by giving them a chance to learn, grow, and ask questions about what it means to become a man through the power of mentorship.
Mentors play a key role in breaking the cycle of fatherlessness and guiding these young men toward a brighter future.
You don’t need a degree in psychology or years of experience—just a willing heart. If you’ve got time for pizza and a game of hoops, you’ve got what it takes to change a young man’s life forever.
Let’s change lives together through the power of mentoring!
